The Best Damn Band In The Land - The Ohio State University Marching Band Alumni

Michael Bruce Hawkins

March 23, 1942 - August 19, 2014

Michael B. Hawkins, 72, of Mansfield, went to be with his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, on Tuesday morning, August 19, 2014. He was born at home, March 23, 1942 in Benton, Ohio to the late Roberta Childers and Milton Charles Hawkins.

Mike graduated from The Ohio State University in 1963, was a member of the OSU marching band, and dotted the "I" in Script Ohio in both 1962 and 1963. He was a stalwart OSU fan through and through. He was the Band Director for Mount Gilead, Marion Christian, and Mansfield Christian schools. After his retirement from teaching, he worked at Meijer for the last 19 years. Music always was, and remained, a huge part of Mike's life. He loved playing music, especially on his keyboard and composed songs from several scripture passages.

He was a member of First Assembly of God. Mike was very dedicated to his family. Spoiling his grandchildren with his undivided attention was a favorite pastime. He received as much from them as he gave.

Mike is survived by his wife, Lynnda "Lynn" Skatzes Hawkins; son, Kevin B. (April) Hawkins of Mount Gilead; grandchildren, Michelle Lynn Hawkins and Stephanie Nicole Hawkins, both of Mansfield, Xander Brewer and Victoria "Tori" Brewer, both of Mount Gilead; a sister, Susan (Randy) Nigh of Marengo; a sister-in-law, Sharon Hawkins of Ada; and several nieces, nephews, and great-nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, Milton Charles Hawkins and Roberta Masters Hawkins Childers; and a brother, Charles "Bud" Howard Hawkins.

There will be no services or visitation at this time. The Diamond Street Home of Wappner Funeral Directors is privileged to serve the family of Michael Hawkins.

Michael was a member of the marching band from 1960 through 1963. He played Sousaphone as a member of K-Row.
