Leonard Machles

August 7, 1926 - August 19, 2020

Leonard Machles, age 94, passed away August 19, 2020. He was born on August 7, 1926 in Cleveland, Ohio, to the late Meyer and Fannie (Mayers) Machles.

Leonard served his country proudly in the US Navy during World War II, and was a member of the Navy band. He was an accomplished musician and proud graduate of The Ohio State University, where he was a member of the Ohio State marching band and was one of the first members of the alumni band.

After several years of teaching music in the New London, Ohio public school system, Leonard became an elementary school principal. He moved to Medina, Ohio in 1968, where he served as principal at Ella Canavan and Sidney Fenn elementary schools. After 30 years in education, Leonard retired from Medina City Schools and established a music business in Medina.

Leonard was a beloved and respected member of his community and was an active volunteer. He was a life time member of Kiwanis, where he held a variety of leadership positions including Lieutenant Governor for the State of Ohio.

He was a devout member of Medina United Church of Christ Congregational where he served on several boards and was the choir director. He also directed the Medina County Chorus for many years.

Leonard loved his wife Emalene, family, friends, music, teaching, community and travel. His family will miss him more than words can say.

He is survived by his children Douglas (Deborah) Machles, David (Karen) Machles, Gary (Emily) Machles, and Jennifer (Sabi) Krispi; grandchildren Heather, Andrew (Dana), Alison (Stephen), Matthew, Eli, Jonathan, Hannah (Rom), Rebekah (Jett) and Maren; and great-grandchildren River, Arlo, Roger, Boomer and Paul.

He was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 66 years, Emalene (Fansler) Machles, in 2015.

Services will be announced at a later date and he will be laid to rest with his wife at Ohio Western Reserve National Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests making a donation to United Church of Christ Congregational, 217 E Liberty Street, Medina, Ohio 44256, noting that it's for the Memorial Gift Fund - Leonard Machles.

Leonard was a member of the marching band from 1946 through 1949. He played Alto horn.
