John William Salter

October 2, 1919 - May 5, 2016

Bill Salter, 96, a longtime resident of Otterbein Saint Marys Retirement Community, Saint Marys, Ohio, died 10:50 A.M. Thursday, May 5, 2016, at Otterbein Saint Marys.

He was born October 2, 1919, in Zanesville, Indiana, the son of Frederick and W. Mildred (Geesey) Salter.

On September 3, 1943, he married Mary Windom in Westerville, Ohio, and she survives at Otterbein Saint Marys.

He is also survived by a daughter, Carol (Tyler) Cassedy of Port Orchard, Washington; by two grandchildren: Lisa Cassedy of San Francisco; Robert Cassedy of Berlin, Germany. He is survived by a great-grandson, Nicolas Salter Cassedy; by a sister, Joy Bensch of Reynoldsburg, Ohio.

He was preceded in death by his parents; by two children: Stephen J. Salter and Jerrie Ann Salter.

Bill graduated from The Ohio State University, with a BS and MS in chemical engineering. He was a veteran of the United States Navy, serving in the South Pacific during WWII.

He retired from the the AE Staley Company in Decatur, Illinois; he had served as the plant manager of the company plant in Columbus, Ohio, and was the plant manager of the Henkel Company plant in Keokuk, Iowa.

He was a member of the Wayne Street United Methodist Church in Saint Marys, and also the Saint Marys Kiwanis Club. He enjoyed woodworking and fishing.

Funeral rites will be held 1:00 P.M. Saturday, May 21, 2016, in the Meyer Community Chapel on the campus of Otterbein Saint Marys Retirement Community, Pastor Carol Sainey, officiant. Burial rites will be held at Elm Grove Cemetery in Saint Marys.

Bill was a member of the marching band from 1937 through 1941. He played trumpet.
